This is what my resume should look like

I was applying for a job today, and I was annoyed because the online application asks for a Microsoft Word document.

I designed my resume in InDesign, and it is a PDF file. I can't upload it to the site.

I know that many companies are asking for Microsoft Word files because it makes it easier to scan the file. However, I don't understand why they can’t scan a PDF file. I can copy and paste from a PDF, so why can't a scanner read the words?

It just annoys me because my resume looks exactly how I want it to in the PDF file. I can still design a semi-decent resume in Microsoft Word, but it isn't going to look nearly as nice.

Since I can't upload my PDF file to the job board, I figured I would upload it here.

Editor's note: I decided to upload my resume again because I've added a few things to it.

White Christmas

Img_1448

Growing up in Missouri, I learned the weather changes all the time, and it is never predictable. This is especially true in winter. Some years we would get a freezing cold winter with lots of snow and ice. Other years we would barely get any snow. In fact, the only thing predictable about Missouri's weather is it will be humid in the summer.

I've been in Missouri since last Tuesday, and for the first two days it rained. It rained hard. My parents' backyard became a lake. If it had been 5 degrees cold, we would have gotten so much snow that we still would be digging ourselves out today.

I gave up any hope of having a White Christmas, and went to bed Christmas Eve expecting to see more rain the next morning. Instead, I was woken up to a pleasant surprise of snow on the ground! It wasn't much, but it was just enough to give me a White Christmas.

My Christmas cards are here!

A month ago I decided that I was going to design my own Christmas cards this year. I thought if I liked the final product then it could be a great addition to my portfolio. Plus, I thought it would be a great way to expand my skill set. I've only done photo illustrations before I decided to draw the snowman. I admit that I'm not a big fan of the scarf, but I like everything else with the snowman. I think for my first illustration it turned out okay.

I sent the cards out to be printed late Monday, and I thought that it would take over a week to get them. However, I got them today! I was a little nervous how they would look printed, but they looked okay. Even the logo that I designed for the back of the cards turned out okay. This might become a new holiday tradition.

Let me know what you think!

Seriously, there wasn't a better picture?

Img_1045

I went to my first Duke men's basketball game on Saturday. After the game, I walked around the Duke Hall of Fame, and checked out all photos, plaques, banners and trophies of the former Duke sports stars. One banner stuck out to me, and not in a good way.

Duke, why did you use this picture on the banner honoring All-American Katie Meier? You can't see her face! Seriously, did anyone think about this in the production process? None of the newspapers I've worked for would run this picture unless it was the only picture from that game, and they certainly wouldn't run the photo if it went with a story about her basketball career. You can't tell me in all the years Katie played for Duke there wasn't at least one picture where you could see her face. Even if there wasn't another action shot, run her team picture because at least I could see her face. If Katie Meier had been standing right next to me when I was looking at her banner, I would have had no clue because I didn't know what she looked liked.

Side note: Katie Meier is now the head coach of University of Miami women's basketball team. You can a nice picture of her bio page: http://hurricanesports.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/meier_katie00.html.

Proud history geek

I'm a history geek. It was ingrained on me at an early age when our family vacations usually revolve around visiting historical places. Since I moved to the South 4 years ago, I've gone to a lot of historical sites. One of my favorite places to visit was Middleton Place near Charleston, SC. The gardens alone are worth the price of admission. For anyone that is a fan of the book "Pride and Prejudice", this could be 'Pemberley.’
